Courses and Activities:
Activity One: First Aid In the Work Place
This is a five day course, part of the Health and Safety requirements.
Candidates must complete both written and practical assessments
Contents. All aspects of First Aid in the Workplace as required by the
Health and Safety Guidelines. The course provides some of the underpinning
knowledge and performance criteria for health and safety practice. The course
will concentrate on the following:
- Current regulations and handling chemicals
- Dealing with Chemicals safely
- Fire regulations
- Basic Life support
- Emergency drugs Emergency Bag contents
- Policies and procedures
- Management after incidents of fire or spillage of chemicals
Beneficiaries: All staff at the Four Homes. This is a mandatory course.
Activity Two: Developing Management Skills
The purpose of this course is to help to develop basic management skills
to improve staff performance during their day-to-day work.
Contents:
- Being an effective communicator
- Management of change
- Negotiation skills
- Presentation skills
- Teamwork and leadership
Beneficiaries: Heads of sections, Heads of departments, Administration
staff, Staff with especial interest in management
Activity Three: Moving and Handling
This is a mandatory course for all staff to equip the staff with safe procedures
to move and handle patients and objects.
Contents:
- Legal aspects of moving and handling
- Anatomy and physiology of the spine
- Biomechanics of movements
- Causes and prevention of back injury
- Safer handling practice
- Physical management
Activity Four: Social and Recreational Skills
This course will enable the staff to develop the necessary skills to carry
out social recreational activities to help to optimise the quality of life
for all residents. The course aims to integrate social recreational
activities within the rehabilitation programme.
Contents:
- Definition of Social recreation in disability
- Social recreation as a therapeutic activity
- Social interaction within the big community
- Organisational activities and outside activities
- The role of sensory stimulation in the management of profoundly
disabled
Activity Five: Community Based Rehabilitation
The Course aims to inform staff of the basic principles of Community Based
Rehabilitation and establish mechanisms for cooperation between institutional
care and Community Based Rehabilitation
Contents:
- Introduction to Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR)
- CBR in Palestine
- Institution versus community
- The role of the family in disability management
Activity Six: Health and Safety at Work
The course aims to ensure the necessary awareness, knowledge and skills
to manage effectively all aspects of health and safety issues. Also
to ensure that all staff are oriented to the policies and procedures and regulations
of health and safety
Contents:
- Fire awareness
- Infection control
- Management of chemicals
- Evacuation of patients
- Management of waste materials and sharps
- Knowledge of local policies and procedures
Activity Seven: Administration of Drugs
The aim of the course is to ensure safe administration of drugs to residents
and improve knowledge among staff of the nature and side effects of drugs
Contents:
- Pharmacology and disability
- Function and side effects of drugs
- Safe administration of drugs
- Legal aspects of drug administration
- Reporting incidents
- Management of incorrect drug administration
Activity Eight: Nursing Care Plan and Documentation
The course aims to develop the skills of nursing staff to plan nursing
care effectively and in a holistic way. It also highlights the legal
and professional implications of documentation.
Contents:
- Nursing process
- Nursing models and theories
- Establishing a nursing model for profoundly disvalued
- The correct documentation of nursing care
- How to audit care plans
- What is the legal implication of incorrect documentation
Activity Nine: Disability Management
The course addresses issues related to the individual, society and disability.
The course explores the national agenda on disability management and the
interface between governmental and non-governmental programmes that provide
services to the disabled in Palestine.

- Social policy and disability issues
- Health care policy and intervention
- Models of disability
- Employment, legislations and educational issues
- Institutionalisation, values and choice
Activity Ten: Care of the Elderly
The Course’s aim is to explore the needs of the elderly in an institutional
setting. Develop the necessary skills to provide appropriate care
maintain privacy and respect individuality.

- The geriatric medicine
- The needs of the elderly
- Models of geriatric care
- Institutionalisation, values and choices
- Health and social care of the elderly in Palestine
Activity Eleven: Paediatric Care
The course aims at exploring the specialised care that profoundly disabled
children requires. It also aims to equip the clinical staff with necessary
skills and knowledge to provide the necessary care effectively and efficiently

- Management of continence (bowel and bladder)
- Development of Disabled children
- Genetic problems

Activity Twelve: Computer Skills
The course aims to help to develop basic computer skills for all staff,
getting started, navigating Excel, calculations, formatting, printing, formula
concepts, multiple sheets, data lists, charts, cell structure.
